A Letter from Sgt. Randall J. Nieves, U.S. Army

March 16, 2009

Ms. Elizabeth Nieves, our Middle School English Language Arts teacher, asked her students to write letters to her brother, Randall, who is serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq. The following is his heartfelt response to their letters.

Dear students of ASHAR,
On behalf of myself and the other soldiers stationed here in Iraq, we would like to tell you thank you for your wonderful letters. They brought a smile to our face and many of us read them over and over whenever we felt sad or missed home. We are anxious to come back home and are proud to have served our country.
My sister, your teacher, Ms. Nieves has spoken of all of you with such pride and affection. Based on your letters, I can see the feeling is mutual. In answer to some of your questions; I am a Yankees fan and cheer on the New York teams. I have an Xbox and many of the guys here play Rock Band, Medal of Honor, Grand Theft Auto and many other games when we have some time to unwind. We also play with our PSP’s and talk online when we can to our families.
Birthdays and holidays are especially hard because we are not able to see our children blow out their candles or open their presents. My company is scheduled to come back home in April and we pray to God that we all arrive safely back to our loved ones. We have hung your letters up in our barracks and wish we could thank all of you in person. I am sorry this letter took so long to send, but as you can imagine we have very little time to respond to letters. This has been a scary, lonely, and hectic time for us troops; please know your letters make a difference.
Thank you all and God bless!

Sincerely,
Sgt. Randall J. Nieves
