Department/Classes Taught: Fourth Grade Boys - Lashon, Fifth Grade Girls - Limudei Kodesh

Bio:  My name is Frieda Salb, and I am teacher of Limudei Kodesh.  I grew up on Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I went to elementary and high school.  Subsequently, I received my B.A. in pedagogy.

Afterward, I travelled to Israel and spent two years in Beis Yaakov Seminary where I graduated with a diploma from Misrad HaChinuch enabling me to teach both in Israel and abroad.

My teaching career has spanned a period of 25 years, and has been spread over 2 continents.  First in Argentina, then New York, Mexico and for the past 6 years in ASHAR.  I have taught various grades, different levels, all Limudei Kodesh subject and to both Ashkenazi and Sefardi students.

I've always tried to emphasize the importance of children being engaged in the learning process.  They should be stimulated and challenged to think.  In this way the new ideas become a part of them, and they can build further.

As the student sees himself progressing and maturing in the skills that he has learned, an inner drive will motivate him to achieve and grow even more.  This is the key to his success.

FIFTH GRADE GIRLS

This year I'll be teaching the fifth grade girls.  Our program is very informative and enjoyable.  I'm looking forward to working with each and every student, helping them reach their potential.

In Chumash we'll start, B"SD, with Sefer Shemot.  We'll cover from the history of our nation in Mitzrayim until receiving the Torah.

Our goals are to know who our fore-fathers were; how we became am Yisrael, an am segulah.  What it means to be a special  nation; to be proud of our heritage and to love Hashem and follow his mitzvot.

We will work on the skills needed to understand a pasuk; how to look for shorashim and musafiyot; what an etnachta and yechida metodik is.

We will take selected Rashi's and practice both reading and understanding them.

At the end of the year, a student should, B"EH, be able to correctly read p'sukim and explain them by herself.

In Navi, we'll start Sefer Shoftim.  We have to explore what caused Bnai Yisrael to sin, how they did teshuva,  who were the shoftim that Hashem sent to save them and what major accomplishments did they have.

Remembering main events, key p'sukim, and important words will be stressed.  We will use the Targilon and encourage the girls to answer on their own or with partners.

In Hebrew language our goal is to cover oral and written expression and to be fluent in these areas.  Reading comprehension will also be emphasized.

Every week, there will be a vocabulary quiz, and the girls will be asked to write sentences using these new words.  In this way, their vocabulary will be enriched and kept active.

In Grammar, B"EH, we will work on different parts of the sentence:

  1. The verb - present, past, future, command
  2. The noun - singular, plural, female, masculine, "shaychut" and "s'michut"
  3. Numbers - female, masculine (1 - 10,000)
  4. Adjectives - singular, plural, female, masculine

At the end of the year, the students, B"EH, should be able to read a story (on their level), understand and summarize it orally according to the grammatic rules.

I'm enthusiastically looking forward to working with the girls, and I hope it will be a successul and productive year for all.
