Mrs. Korn's fourth grade girls are busy learning about the State of New York. The girls first investigated the map of New York and practiced basic geography skills. Students then created their own imaginary island with a map, key, landforms, and even an original name. The girls learned about the state flag, flower, and bird before moving on to learn about New York’s borders, the population, and local versus state government.
The unit culminated in the Famous New Yorkers biography project. Students worked together to research famous New Yorkers, creating their own biography reports and synthesizing information from several sources. The girls are very proud of their reports, currently displayed on the bulletin board outside the 4G classroom.
The final lessons of the unit found the girls sharing their innovative biography presentations with the entire class. Some groups created videos and slideshows, while others used claymation, board games, and songs. In this way, the girls learned about all of the famous New Yorkers we researched using media that tapped their strengths and stretched their imaginations.
Please keep in mind that these presentations are the work of fourth graders, unedited by adults. We are so impressed with their efforts and we hope you enjoy watching.
