On Wednesday night, December 8, the ASHAR basketball team, the Sharks, played against the MDS (Manhattan Day School) Mavericks in the ASHAR gym, with the final score being 37-30 in favor of the Mavericks. With that loss, ASHAR falls to 0-1 on the season.

ASHAR played a good game receiving contributions from key players such as Dovy Schreiber, Ari Frankel, Moshe Baitz and Yehuda Taub but still could not take home the win.

Noey Taub, the starting point guard for the Sharks, complained after the loss, “I am upset because I believe the refs missed some calls but anyway, we still were not playing as a team.”

Ezzi Hamburger was equally disappointed, “We did not have enough practice, and the refs missed a few key calls.”

ASHAR has a tough schedule ahead of them, as they are playing some talented teams such as Hillel, WDS, and RAMAZ with the Sharks’ next game scheduled against Hillel on December 26. Each team plays ten games, five at home and five away and each game is exciting, and competitive.

Be that as it may, it is all water under the bridge, leaving only one thing for sure. The Sharks plan on giving it their all in the next game. You can count on it.

Chess Chevra is very excited to bring an after-school chess program to ASHAR this year. Through organized tournaments, instruction on strategy, and reflection on students' games, we are eager to give the boys a healthy outlet that builds critical life skills: focus, patience, planning, prudence, sportsmanship, and seeing the consequences of one's decisions.

The session will be held on Mondays and run for 10 weeks. The cost is $180 per student.  See times and dates below.

ASHAR's first graders enjoyed an educational and exciting trip to the Challenger Learning Center. There, students worked together as mission specialists to travel in a simulated voyage to the moon and back. Coming back down to earth might have been challenging for some classes, but ASHAR students were ready and eager to get back to school, knowing that more fun and adventures await them every day.

A Whole Song and Dance at ASHAR

ASHAR's seventh-grade boys had an unusual school day when they experienced a once-in-a-lifetime event of filming a music video. The video, produced by Rabbi Benzion Klatzko of Shabbat.com, was part of ASHAR Boys Division Month of Chesed program.

Class 7B students and rebbeim went to the Tomchei Shabbos facility, where they met with Rabbi Klatzko. The students' performance was then featured in a professionally produced music video promoting Tomchei Shabbos of Rockland County.

Ezra Markowitz recalls, "I enjoyed the clap-activating lights. We would clap, and then the lights changed colors to the beat of the song."

"I remember the feeling when the video drone flew overhead and caused a breeze," Aharon Yaniv commented. "I saw how that made good footage for the video when we saw the final version."

"The carrot cart was the best part," remembers Al Korn. "We took a cart filled with carrots, and Moshe Yosef sat on top of it, pretending to drive it. We pushed him around."

"I loved it when the grape juice spilled on the floor. I started making Kiddush on it as a joke," Gabi Sabol said. "I did backflips for the music video. It had to be on beat."

Gavi Weinstein enjoyed taking pineapples and pretending to play football with them. "Gabi and I started dancing on top of grape juice boxes for the video."

Baruch Yosef Kushner recalls "I like when we practiced turning like robots with the boxes."

The music in the video was composed by Rabbi Benzion Klatzko, with solos performed by Luzy Klatzko and Meyer Klatzko.

You can watch the music video below.
